What is Online Tutoring?

QWC online tutorials are “asynchronuous.” In the writing center world, that simply means you don’t need to be present while the tutor reads your paper and provides you with feedback. Here’s how QWC online tutorials work.

1. You make an appointment with any tutor, just as you would for a face-to-face tutorial.

2. In the appointment box, you select the option for online tutoring.

3. The system will prompt you to upload your paper. Make sure to observe the upload requirements* for file formats and file names.

4. Your paper is delivered to the QWC, where we store it until your appointment.

5. At your appointment time, the tutor opens your file and reads your paper.

6. Using MS Word’s "insert comment” feature, your tutor provides you with feedback on your draft.

7. At the end of the appointment time, your tutor drafts an e-mail summarizing her comments, attaches your paper with inserted comments, and sends the e-mail-plus-attachment to your uark-account.

8. A short while after the end of your appointment time, you access your e-mail account, read the tutor’s e-mail, open the attachment and read the tutor’s feedback on your draft.

9. Process complete.

FAQ

Q: Do I have to be online during the tutorial?

A: No. The tutor does not need to communicate with you during the process.

Q: When I get my paper back, can I write back and ask the tutor questions?

A: No. Unfortunately, the tutor’s schedule will be booked with appointments to work with other students, so she won’t be available to provide you with this second round of response. You can make another online tutoring appointment, or you can make a follow-up face-to-face appointment to work with the same tutor the next time she’s on duty in the center.

Q: I have a 50-page thesis. Can I send the whole thing in for tutoring?

A: Online tutors can work with about five pages in a one-hour session. When you have a longer document, you’ll need to make a series of appointments and submit your document in sections.
